Forklift Winches - A winch is a mechanical tool which specializes in letting out, or winding out or pulling in or winding up the tension of a cable, wire rope, rope or a wire cable. It its most basic form it is constructed of a spool together with a connected hand crank. More complex winches are found at the heart of machinery like steam shovels, tow trucks and elevators. At times the spool can be referred to as the winch drum. Complex designs have gear assemblies that could be driven by pneumatic, internal, hydraulic or electric combustion drives. Some winches may comprise a solenoid brake or a mechanical brake or a ratchet and pawl mechanism in order to prevent it from unwinding unless the pawl is retracted.
Generally, the rope is stored on the winch. There is similar piece of equipment called a capstan which does not store the rope. In sailing, when a line is trimmed on a sailboat, the crew member operates the winch handle using one hand while tailing the other in order to maintain tension on the turns. Several winches have a cleat or stripper so as to maintain tension. These designs are known as "self-tailing" winches.
Quite often, a winch is utilized in large theatrical shows as a part of the mechanics to move staging. Every now and then there are also winches really imbedded in the stage to help transfer the several bigger set pieces off and on the stage.
The new generation of winches have been made for snow and water sports enabling the riders to be pulled quickly across a body of water or of snow. This could stimulate a riding experience that is usually supplied by a boat, snow mobile or a wave runner.
